They play a young couple that met each other in the 1940s and they both fall in love. James Garner and Gena Rowlands pay the older actors that starred in the notebook. Rowlands began her film career in 1958 in the film "the High Cost of Living." Rowlands was married to film director and actor John Cassavetes and they appeared in ten films together. Gena Rowlands received a Satellite Award for her supporting actress role in the notebook.
