About Louisville Universities

Introduction

The University of Louisville was one of the first chartered universities and was founded in 1796. It was also the first public owned university in the country. The University of Louisville is very popular worldwide and enrolls students from 118 out of the existing 120 countries. The University of Louisville is mandated by the Kentucky General Assembly to be a preeminent metropolitan research university. The university has gained its respect over the years and now serves to be one of the best universities in Louisville.

History

The University of Louisville traces its roots back to the year 1798, when a school of higher learning was chartered by the Kentucky General Assembly, in the town of Louisville. The Assembly also ordered the sale of 6,000 acres of South Kentucky land to pay for its implementation. University of Louisville is a municipally funded institution, meaning that its funding only came from the city of Louisville. The University of Louisville has a history as a public municipal university from 1846 to 1969 and that as a public state university from 1970 to the present.

The university consists of 12 different schools and colleges including College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Education and Human Health Development, Graduate School, J.B. Speed School of Engineering, Kent School of Social Work, Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, School of Dentistry, School of Medicine, School of Music, School of Nursing and School of Public Health and Information Sciences.

University of Louisville does not confine itself to one area of study. It offers a bachelors degree in 70 fields of study and a masters degree in 22 fields of study. This organization ranks universities according to different criterion. These criterions include Total Research, Federal Research, Endowment Assets, Annual Giving, National Academy Members, Faculty Awards, Doctorates Granted, Postdoctoral Appointees and SAT/ACT Range.

Moreover, the U.S. News and World Report ranks University of Louisville in the First Tier. The College of Business of University of Louisville is ranked among the top seven percent in the nation, academically. The dental school of the university is ranked in the top 10, regularly, according to the board scores. The law school of University of Louisville is ranked at the 97th position in the whole nation. Moreover, the College of Business of the university offers a distinctive PhD program. The University of Louisville has been named the 2010 National Model PhD Entrepreneurship Program Award Winner by the country Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (AmericaSBE) from all the Louisville universities.

The University of Louisville, also known as U of L, is famous for its athletic programs, which are among the best in the nation. It is very well-known for its basketball and football teams, which have won numerous games. In addition to the main campus called the Belknap Campus, classes are held at the health science center in the downtown Louisville. The total student count is approximately 21,000 and grows every year.
