Introduction

There are various criteria for ranking universities, including but not limited to academic reputation, region, faculty, subject, employer reputation among others. A number of organizations usually carry out the studies and surveys to rank the universities and colleges, but perhaps the most famous one is the QS University Rankings. The following is a list of 50 top universities in the world. The list for these 50 top universities is the overall ranking based on all criteria used by QS University Ranking for ranking the academic institutions in the year 2011/2012.

Step 1

1. The first on the 50 top universities list is the University of Cambridge which is found in the United Kingdom. According to the ranking, the university tops the list with a score of 100 pints.
2. Harvard University of the United States of America comes in second with a score of 99.34 points.
3. Massachusetts Institute of Technology of the USA closely follows at number three with a score of 99.21 points.
4. In fourth position is Yale University, also in USA with a score of 98.84 points.
5. The University of Oxford in the United Kingdom is number five with a score of 98 points.
6. Imperial College London, also of the United Kingdom is in position six with 97.64 points.
7. University College London (UCL) of the UK is at number seven with 97.33 points.
8. At number eight is the University of Chicago in USA with 96.08 points.
9. The University of Pennsylvania in USA is at number nine, having 95.73 points.
10. Closing the first ten is the Columbia University of USA with a score of 95.28 points.

From the above, it clearly emerges that the first 10 of the 50 top universities are all from either the USA or UK. The next ten on the list are as follows, in that order:

The 50 top universities list offers some guidance for those people/organizations seeking various relationships with the institutions. However, one has to remember that the order keeps changing every often as the institutions keep on undergoing certain changes in infrastructure, programs, intakes and so on. It is not uncommon for an institution to one time rank well in the 50 top universities list for one year and to be out of the list in the next ranking.
