Mental health is a very important issue in society today. With one in five people experiencing mental health issues at some point in their lives, there has to be help available for these people. These mental health issues can be anything including a mental breakdown due to a traumatic event in life or a mental illness that has been present since birth or developed over time. Simple doing a search online for help on how to deal with symptoms or asking for help from a trusted friend is simply not enough for people suffering from mental illness. Simple issues can be taken care of on their own or with available and nearby help but some issues are more complex and harder to deal with and may require professional treatment. That is where a counselor mental health comes in. They are the first person someone should see if they need help dealing with a mental health issues. Once the counselor speaks with the patient and get the necessary information from them, they will than recommend what they should do next and anything other steps that need to be taken. Only one visit may be needed or several or the visits may need to be ongoing depending on the person and their needs. In order to become a counselor mental health and provide these necessary services to people in need, there are some steps to become a counselor mental health that must be completed first. Below I have outlined what steps need and should be taken if you are considering a career in this field.

Step 1

First of all, if you are still in high school, start planning your path to becoming a counselor mental health now. Instead of wasting your time taking courses that are just fun or are easy, make sure you sign up for the courses that will help you with your career in the future. Sociology, social studies, psychology are all great courses to start with if they are offered at your school.

Step 2

There are other things you can do to when you are young to prepare to become a counselor mental health. Network with others in your classes or people your parents may know who work in the field, shadow someone on the job to see if it is actually something you would like to, talk to career counselors.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 3

Once you graduate high school, the next step is college or university. There are college courses available to be a counselor metal health but university is usually a better option because you will touch on so many more things and you will learn both the theory and hands on approach to everything you need to know. College is usually a year or two years while university is three or four years with the option to pursue more schooling beyond those first years.

 

Step 4

It is also a good idea to attend meetings and events for counselor mental health workers and take extra night courses if they are offered in the city you live in. Always keep your toes in your work and be up-to-date on the industry and any new developments that are pertinent to your work and to the people you deal with everyday.

Step 5

Another important thing to consider when trying to become a counselor mental health is the fact that some of the things you will be dealing with on a regular basis could have a negative impact on your own mental health.  It is a good idea to be prepared for these things and to be ready for them when they happen.
