Introduction

People go to work to earn money and support a standard of living. For many workers, environmental safety & health are just as important as income. After all, if a person develops chronic diseases or acute sickness from working at a specific job, he or she may be too ill to be a productive member of a company's workforce. Also, the risk of workplace injury not only threatens the body of each worker, but the overall solvency of the business, because of the legal issues and financial penalties that result from having an unsafe work environment. Whether you are a manager or a regular employee in the workplace, there are a few tips that you can consider in making sure the environment is safety and healthy for all.

Step 1

Create a manual or employee handbook that addressed environmental safety & health specifically for your organization. This should be the job of the manager, but experienced employees might also be tasked with creating a safety manual. No two companies are exactly alike, and so one size doesn't fit all when it comes safety and health in the workplace. For example, as business technology and tools advance, companies upgrade and update to newer technologies, as necessary, and independently from other entities; this variance is technology makes it difficult to pattern environmental safety & health after another company.

Step 2

Seek help from authoritative consultants and subject matter experts concerning environmental safety & health. No human being is capable of completely understanding all the aspects of keeping the workplace safe and healthy, including doctors who have gone through years of medical school.

Managers and business owners can call upon the collective body of knowledge from many experts that have experience and safety and put that knowledge to you. For example, most businesses are familiar with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA has personnel on the federal level who can provide expertise to businesses. Many states also have OSHA offices. There are also private consultants who work on behalf of a local company, providing environmental safety & health expertise to local businesses.

Step 3

Create a one-on-one or group training session that reinforces that need for employees to learn about environmental safety & health. This training may happen for new employees during orientation, but be sure to hold training sessions for existing employees so that they are made aware of any new findings in the area of environmental safety & health.
