How to find fashion related jobs

Introduction

Fashion has truly evolved over the years. It has inspired a lot of people to express themselves and let their personality shine thru their clothes and accessories. Some people have become a legend because of their fashion choices e.g. Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O and Elizabeth Taylor to name a few. And so it is no wonder why a lot of people dreamt of breaking into the fashion business. But the big question is: How? Here are some tips on how to find fashion related jobs

Step 1

1. Be prepared to work your way to the bottom

Whether it's an editor, fashion photographer, model, stylist or designer. You need to start at the bottom and work your way to the top. Those fashion gods that you idolize didn't get their way in just a blink of the eye.

Learn to be patient and Keep an open mind. Always set your mind that in fashion, everything starts at the bottom.

2. Decide what field in the fashion industry that you're most interested in

Determine what field you want to be in. If you're not sure which way to go the tip is to assess your skills and interest for instance if you’re into photography then being an aspiring fashion photographer is your niche. If you love to write, try your luck as a fashion contributor

Or if you love to make clothes, you may want to pursue a career as a fashion designer just like Michael Korrs, Vera Wang or Alexander McQueen.

3. Create a test shoot for your portfolio

It is important that you have a portfolio no matter what field in the industry you'd like to be in. This will showcase your talents and abilities for clients and potential employers to hire you in the future. To do this, you need to find people with similar interest and start doing a test shoot. For example if you want to be a designer,  make several clothes and find friends with the same interest (photographer, model, stylist and beautician) and start working!

4. Be an intern. This is also vital in your fashion career. Internships give you the knowledge and the skills that you'll need not to mention all the connection that you'll get while working for them. Different fashion magazines hire interns all throughout the year and so you need to be vigilant when they are hiring. Prepare your portfolio and rock your interview and you're in for a good start. Just be careful because some companies are fraud posing to be working for the magazine and will try to get money from you. A legit magazine company will not ask for any fee and will even give you an allowance and a salary while you’re working for them.

Tips

Getting a job in the fashion industry is not as easy as you may think. It has a lot challenges and hardships that will come into your way but always remember to never quit and keep an open mind and the doors of the "fashion world" would gladly open their doors for you to conquer.
