How To Choose a Home Washer

Introduction

Consumers have numerous choices for a washer at home. Appliance retailers sell front loading and top loading washers, but the variation between these two basic technologies is confusing. Conventional household washers include top loading machines. Front loading machines are considered more modern version of washers and are said to be better. In fact, most front loaders sold in stores today are called high efficiency machines because they do a better job of liberating dirt and stain from clothing, while also using very little electricity and water resources.

Front loading washers rotate on a horizontal axis. The drum gently tumbles your dirty laundry in and out of the water that rests near the bottom. Top loaders agitate dirty laundry in a tub of water which can be especially harsh on delicate clothing items. Today, however, appliance manufacturers have updated the technology in top loading washers that are sold for home use to make them just as efficient at cleaning dirty clothes as front loaders. Now that you know the two basic fundamentals technologies that drive home clothes washers, you can consider other aspects as you decide on which machine to purchase.

Step 1

Choose a washer for your home that has vibration control technologies. Many households create a laundry room for the second floor for easy access. However, as the washer goes in an out of fast spinning cycles, it creates extreme vibrations that are disturbing to the household and can potentially cause damage over the long-term.

Most machines have levelling legs that you can adjust to minimize or eliminate vibrations. However, for modern front loading washers, the machines have internal electronic sensors that help to reduce vibrations.

Step 2

Choose a washer with a sanitize option. Many homes are particular about germ and other organisms. Many of these germs are washed off from simply using detergent and bleach. However, a sanitize option can make sure that nearly 100 percent of germs are eliminated based on medically acceptable standards.

Step 3

Choose a washer for your home with a standard warranty that is longer than one year. Even if it only an extra year, as a two year standard warranty, that is much better as many things can go wrong over the course of using the washer in your home. If the manufacturer only offers a one year warranty, then consider purchasing an extended warranty, especially if the machine has a lot of fancy electronics built in.

Step 4

Choose a washer for your home that can go on a pedestal. This is convenient for tall people who hate bending down. It also helps prevent little children and pets from crawling inside the appliance.

Step 5

Visit a local retail store to see a demonstration of the washer before you take it home. Advanced washers commonly have a "Demo Mode" that allows you to interact with the many features and functions, sometimes even if there is no water supply. Use this time to determine of the washer is too complicated to use. Many modern washers have push button controls and an LCD display screen, which confuses people who are accustomed to conventional washers with a turn dial.

Choose a washer that matches your dryer.
