At its core a laptop is the same whether you use it for personal or business purposes. However, people who use a laptop for professional purposes, such as running a small business for consulting for clients for major corporation, should use a laptop that is suited for the working professional. The layperson expects businesses to have and use the best computing technology around, especially when it involves financial transactions or other sensitive business data.

If you are in the market for a new business laptop, your choices are no doubt daunting. On one hand, this large selection is to your benefit, because the increased competition creates lower prices, helping your bottom line. On the other hand, you may spend hours researching the best laptop for your business, and still end up with a machine that does not quite meet your business. If you take a few tips into consideration as you search for laptop business computers, you may have greater success in obtaining the machine that is just right for you.

Step 1

Make sure the operating system is the business-class version in your laptop business computer. Realize that all versions of Microsoft Windows are not created alike. in fact, the company leaves out certain features that many users come to expect as standard features in any operating system no matter the version.

For example, being able to network with other laptops and peripherals is  essential for many business users. Unfortunately, Microsoft does limit some networking functions in the basic and home versions of its operating systems. It is only in the business version and higher that users do not have to worry about missing out on critical business functions.

If you are really interested in one particular laptop business computer that does not have a business class operating system, you may be able to upgrade to the business version after purchase. However, the cost for this upgrade will almost match the price you would pay for going with business-class operative system in the very beginning.

Step 2

Obtain a laptop business computer that has a longer than usual battery life. For example, the average battery life for a laptop computer is generally around 2 to 3 hours. However, a business-class laptop has battery life that approaches 5 to 6 hours or more. These extra hours are beneficial to professionals who travel or work in the field, away from the office.

Also consider purchasing at least one additional battery so that you can have a backup power supply when you are away from a power outlet for an extended period of time.

Step 3

Consider obtaining an extended warranty in addition to the standard warranty that is available on most laptop business computers.  Business laptops tend to cost more than the regular personal computer. A warranty can help you protect your investment and prevent major losses for your business. Many computer manufacturers to include service agreements that span several years, and include free parts and labor.
