What You Need To Know About a Memory Foam Mattress

A little about the foam mattress

Memory foam is a technology that allows the bed to conform to a warm body. The foam is pressure sensitive, which enables the mattress to mold rather quickly to a body laying on top of it. Once the user gets up out of the bed, their body leaves an imprint. Like a “memory”--this is the marketing pitch used for memory foam mattresses.

Pros of a foam mattress

Memory foam conforms to the shape of your body. This allows for a comfortable mattress, and helps to prevent back problems. There are a select number of people that dislike the way it conforms, however there is an 83% satisfaction rate. Memory foam isolates motion. If there happen to be two people sleeping on one mattress, there’s always the possibility of keeping one another up. With a memory foam mattress, you’ll hardly notice if your partner happens to be tossing and turning all night long. Memory foam helps prevent joint pain. This is partly due to the fact that the mattress keeps your spine straight, and your body in line. It also helps to prevent tossing and turning, and uncomfortable positions that can sometimes cause joint pain. Memory foam is more durable. There is a significantly smaller chance of a mattress made from memory foam to break, then a typical spring bed. However, you should still ensure that you exercise proper care and cleaning of your mattress, to ensure that it lasts.

Cons of a foam mattress

Memory foam is expensive. A mattress made from memory foam is significantly more expensive then a typical spring mattress. Memory foam retains body heat. A foam mattress doesn’t really breath, it retains body heat, which can get really hot. This might be nice during the winter, but during the summer, or sleeping with a partner, it could become problematic. Memory foam can make it hard to move. A mattress made from memory foam can sometimes impede movement. While this can help with problems like joint pain caused from a spring mattress, changing positions if you get uncomfortable isn’t as convenient. Memory foam hardens in the cold. Your mattress may feel a little stiff during cold weather, or when it’s cold in the house. If you don’t like a firm bed, this may become problematic. Memory foam has an odor. A new mattress may retain an odor, that will eventually fade away. If you’re too sensitive to the odor, let the product air out for a couple days before you use it.

Caring for memory foam

Upon receiving a memory foam product, it’s smart to let the product sit, and get used to the temperature of the room, and air out. The memory foam will adjust to the temperature of your home. To clean it, spot wash the dirty areas of the mattress with warm water and a mild detergent. Let it air dry, and don’t machine wash, you can tear the product. Be sure to keep heat and flame away from your foam mattress, as it may catch fire.
