How To Get Certified By the Pcnb Nursing Board

Published at 03/09/2012 01:50:37

Introduction

The main thing that all pediatric nurses have in common is that they are certified by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PCNB). Other than that, their education level and their roles vary from job to job, depending on the institution they are working for. You can find them in almost all health-related institutions of PCNB, such as residential nursing facilities, schools, private medical practices, hospitals and many more. Here are 5 steps on how to become a pediatric nurse certified by the PCNB.

Step 1

The first most important step in becoming a pediatric nurse is deciding whether or not this is the perfect job for you. This isn’t like other regular jobs, where you work with papers or computers. This is a job that requires you to get involved, sometimes over the limits because you’ll be working with children every day.

Step 2

Choose a nursing program. There are various factors that must be taken into consideration when you decide to be a pediatric nurse. For example, you must decide if you want to be a Registered Nurse or a Licensed Practical Nurse. These are different because of the level of education you get: for a LPN you can get a diploma after a year, while for the RN you have to stay in school for 2 or 3 years. Some other factors you need to consider are: admission requirements, financial availability, tuition taxes, or location.

Step 3

Become a nurse. If you want to become a pediatric nurse, the first thing to do is becoming a nurse. All nurses are educated in accredited schools before working in the field. In some states, they are known as Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) and in others as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). To become a nurse, you must have at least the minimum amount of education, meaning one year in an accredited school. If you want to have more responsibilities as a nurse you can become a registered nurse, but you have to study longer (between 2 and 3 years in an accredited school).

Step 4

Learn about the roles of pediatric nurses before asking PCNB certification. Becoming a pediatric nurse is more than just taking a test. The PCNB searches for nurses dedicated to the job and to working with children. A pediatric nurse has a variety of functions and is dependent on setting. You must be able to adapt and to learn as you go. Some of the duties performed by a pediatric nurse include: health assessments, health related teaching, vaccinations, developmental assessments, provide medical care to all children and many more.

Step 5

Getting the actual PCNB certification. Nurses everywhere can work with children. However, if you want to be a specialized “Pediatric Nurse”, you have to be certified by the PCNB because the job requires higher education standards. Registered nurses can become certified pediatric nurse by taking a test administered by the PCNB. In order to be eligible for the test, you must meet the following criteria: you were a nurse for at least 2 years and you had more than 30 hours of education in the last 2 years.
