Americanapparel manufactures clothing in the United States. They not only manufacture clothing, but also sell to retail and wholesale outlets. The company was founded by Dov Charney in 1989. In 2006,  American Apparel was bought in an acquisition by Endeavor Acquisition Corporation for $360 million. The American Apparel exports clothing that is "Made in the USA" and has sold approximately $125 million of apparel outside of the United States.

Americanapparel is based in Los Angeles, with a huge manufacturing facility of 800,00 square feet. American Apparel employs over 10,000 people throughout the world.

Being one of the fastest growing companies, American Apparel has received numerous awards. They received the California Business Fit Award, founder Dov Charney was listed in the Power 100, also received the ICIC, the 10th Anniversary Inner City Summit Award.

Americanapparel has many advantages over other clothing companies. At American Apparel the company believes in treating its employees better with a good working environment, unlike other places, and with higher wages with most average workers earning around $12 an hour for sewing positions.

A worker at American Apparel not only has the advantage of higher wages versus other similar jobs, but they also receive benefits for themselves and family. Benefits such as company health insurance which runs $8 week and $1 to $3 for children. They also feature an on site medical clinic which offers primary care, urgent care and preventive.

A factory worker at American Apparel on average brings home $500 a week in comparison to other jobs in the same field where they make $30-$40 a day.

The company also provides many other items for their employees such as paid time off, English as a second language classess, massage therapists on site, free bicycles and maintenance on site, lunches subsidized by the company, bus passes, free parking and workers at the company can make free local and long distance calls. Employees are able to take part in the company's stocks. Initially when American Apparel first went public, they offered their employees $40 million in stock shares.

The company Americanapparel is not run by any union and has been an advocate for immigration laws. American Apparel is environmentally conscientious and is considered to be vegan. They have plans over the next four years to increase the use of organic cotton from 20% to 80%.

American Apparel has been involved in helping raise money for different causes such as providing aid to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina.  They also donated clothing that totaled well over $400,000 to the victims of the Haiti earthquake and also 5,000 pairs of socks to Soles4Souls.
