Introduction

Finding a career in the apparel and clothing business can be exciting and quite fun. If you are fashion-minded, then the apparel and clothing business would be perfect for you.

Step 1

You need to decide which type of job that you want to pursue. There are a number of options you have to consider when it comes to apparel and clothing.

Step 2

An easy way to get your foot in the door for a fashion job is working at a retail store as a sales clerk. Go to your favorite clothing and apparel store and put your application in for a job. Put your application in more than one store to increase your chances of finding a job.

Step 3

Another way to get involved in the clothing and apparel industry is by becoming an intern. Some fashion design companies may have openings for an intern. By working as an intern you will be able to gain some much needed experience.

Step 4

You can decide to become a fashion designer to design your own line of apparel and clothing. Going this route will require you to go to college and earn a degree. You will need to find a reputable fashion college that offers degrees. A few great colleges to choose from to earn your degree in apparel and clothing is the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. This school offers both associates and Bachelors degree programs. The Fashion Institute has campuses in California in Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Another great school is The Parsons School of Design, which is where Tim Gunn, host of Project Runaway, studied at in New York City.

Step 5

If you have the spirit of an entrepreneur and are business savvy than you should try starting your own apparel and clothing business. You can do this a number of ways by either renting out a shop, finding a wholesale supplier to purchase clothing at deep discount to stock your store, or you can choose to open an online clothing shop either by a regular website or through an auction site such as Ebay. Many people have become successful at running their own business especially through Ebay. Ebay provides a solid footing for anyone to get started selling clothing. It is easy to set up an auction on Ebay along with the ability to have your own storefront displaying all of your apparel and clothing. With Ebay's massive traffic it will be easier to develop a customer base than going alone with your own domain and website.

When starting your business you will want to keep a few things in mind like taxes, whether you want to set your business up as a corporation, decide what your marketing plan will be.

Step 6

If you are an experienced seamstress with some creativity, try your hand at developing your own apparel and clothing line and selling it.

Tips

If you are aspiring to become a fashion designer, keep in mind that it is a hard business to break into and most people won't get a job right out of college. It is wise to find a job in fashion to work your way up the ladder, like as a stylist and merchandiser, sales rep at a store, or a buyer. To get your fashion designs noticed enter any competitions you find or fashion shows. You can also try hosting your own fashion show.
