Discover 8 Tips For Federal Loan Student

If you are thinking about going back to school, then you may also be considering getting a federal student loan. These loans can be a great way to pay for school and get the education that you need. There are also some things that need to be considered before taking out a federal student loan. Just because these loans do not have to be paid back until six months after you graduate you should not treat them, as though they are free money. They are loans that will accrue interest and will not be eligible for discharge in bankruptcy. Below are listed some tips that you may want to consider before getting a federal student loan.

Step 1

Know how much you need to borrow. It may be tempting to take out the maximum amount of money that you can, but this can be a fatal error. You may be taking out more than you need and will be loading yourself down with debt once you graduate.

Step 2

Make sure that you have your past tax returns in order. If you are still a dependent of your parents then you'll need their tax returns also. This will make sure that you can successfully fill out the FAFSA. You will need all of this information to find out if you're eligible for loans or grants.

Step 3

Fill out the FAFSA. This is the most important step when trying to get a federal student loan. The information that you put onto the FAFSA will determine how much you can get in federal student loans. It will also let you know if you are eligible for grants or other types of aid.

Step 4

Wait for your results from the FAFSA. The process may take a few weeks, but you will eventually get your results back. If you fill out the FAFSA early then you are more likely to get a result quicker. So it is best to fill in the FAFSA as soon as you have you and your parent's tax return information.

Step 5

Once you have learned your results you will often times be contacted by the school of your choice. You will choose which schools to send your FAFSA information to and this lets them know how much of a federal student loan you can get. Now you can begin to work with them on more paperwork.

Step 6

You will also need to take a short online class before you will be eligible for federal student loans. This class and test to make sure that you know what is entailed with taking out a federal student loan. It will make sure you know how interest rate work and also how repayment works.

Step 7

Once you have completed this test you can then fill out the forms to obtain your federal student loan. Your school will either accept or reject your request for aid and you will get the results either in the mail or through the school's website. The school may also need copies of your tax return to ensure that all the information you provided was correct.

Step 8

If you have been accepted for the federal student loan you will obtain it based on your school's schedule. Some chools disburse the federal student loan once a semester, while others may disburse it twice a semester. Either way you will have the federal student loan that you need to go school.
