How To Set Up a Gmail Email Account

Published at 03/08/2012 20:12:04

Introduction

The Google Corporation started in the late 1990s with a search engine. It wasn't until 2004 when the company broadened its product offerings through its email client called Gmail. Many users primarily use Gmail as a web based email client. This requires that users open the installed Internet browser on a computer or other Internet capable device. Then users navigate to the Gmail website to log into their account with the user name and password. This type of email platform resembles that of Yahoo! Mail and Windows Live Mail, which are also major players in this space.

What many people take for granted is how the account is structured after setting up an email address through Google, as well as through most other providers. Users are setting up an account, similar to an account with the local telephone company for voice service or the local cable TV company for TV programming. Although Gmail is free, companies like Google, maintain a type of account on the backend, because you have the potential to subscribe to many of the company's other products and services. It is easier to tie everything into a single account, rather than having multiple accounts for multiple services.

For example, you can also access account specific features on Google Maps that lets your save directions from your home to another location. Then you can access that same map on a mobile device, such as a cell phone or smartphone, so that you can use the service and products attached to you account while you are on the go.

These various Google products that are available to you are easy to find and begin to use. Where most people have difficulty is understanding how to set up a Gmail account.

Step 1

Open the installed Internet browser on your computer to begin the process of setting up a Gmail email account. Although Google has its own browser called Chrome, you can use any major browser to set up an email account, including Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser and Mozilla's Firefox browser.

Step 2

Navigate the following website using the Internet browser: http://mail.google.com . This is the official home page of the Google's Gmail email client. Bookmark this website in your Internet browser so that you can easily get back to Gmail when you need to check, send and reply to emails.

Step 3

Click on the "Create An Account" link to set up your Gmail email account. If you cannot locate the link by eyesight, use the Find feature in your Internet browser to scan the web page. For example, Firefox and IE uses can press the Ctrl and F keys on the keyboard. Type "create an account."

Step 4

Fill out the personally identifiable information on the web based form to set up the Gmail email account in your name. Although some fields are optional, you may be required to complete most of the fields, such as your date of birth.

Step 5

Click the "Next Step" button to move on to the next steps, if any, for setting up the Gmail email account. This button also double-checks the information you input in the form, making sure you haven't duplicated the email address for another user.

Read the instructions and finish creating your account.

Tips

  • Keep your Gmail email password in a safe place.
