Introduction

The labour force of a country consists of all the people within a certain age group, who are the earning members of their family, which means people who are already employed or are seeking employment. Students, retired personnel, people in prisons or similar institutions and elderly people who are at home do not account for the labour force of the country. Any job requires certain effort but labour jobs are actually the unskilled or the semi skilled jobs that make up the bulk.

Types

There are certain types of labour jobs like the formal and the informal types. Formal labour jobs are the ones which are instructed and paid for, on a regular basis. The formal job sector accounts for the gross annual product of the country unlike the informal type. Informal jobs are actually the jobs which make up for the maximum work in the developing countries. They require the skilled labour forces whose contribution in the development of a country is immense. Gender plays an important role in the informal labour category as women are commonly engaged in informal works than men. Women occupy the informal jobs sector through their work as street vendors as well as home based workers. Agriculture is also an example of informal job which requires labour. Informal and formal work can be categorized and agricultural labour is a typical example of informal labour.

Workforce and unemployment

The workforce is best described as the labour pool in a company. It is used to describe the total number of people employed by a company or in a nation. The term workforce at labour jobs leaves out the management, employers and the organization and includes the working class in general. This term is used mostly in cases of manual labour. It also describes people who are available for work. Unemployment is a state where a person, able and willing to work, cannot find a suitable paid work for himself or herself. There are different types of unemployment like structural unemployment, seasonal unemployment, mass unemployment, voluntary unemployment, residual unemployment, frictional unemployment, casual unemployment and under unemployment. Unemployment, needless to say, has a negative role in the development of a nation and is very harmful. Hence, unskilled or semi skilled labour jobs are a boon for nations, who are still in the developing stages, as it helps them get a stable regular national gross income. A nation with less unemployment is a stable and growing nation. It is a sign of prosperity.
