Breathing methods are very important during the parturient stage of labor. Proper breathing during childbirth provides the required amount of oxygen for the baby, relaxation and provides tremendous relief from contraction pain. The breathing styles should be applied at any situation, location and method of childbirth. Mastering the parturient breathing techniques makes child birth easier and less painful. Breathing in in a steady rhytm calms the mother and provides more oxygen that is essential for both the baby and the mother.
A woman in parturient labor should find a comfortable breathing rate and try her best to keep the breathing calm, even and rhythmic. Basic breathing during parturient involves breathing in through the nose and breathing out through the mouth. The parturient mother can make her work easier through counting up to a number that she is comfortable with or repeating a pleasant self created mantra. The parturient woman should have a focal point that could be anything like an object in the room.
Coordinating breathing involves concentration, focus and relaxation. A deep exaggerated breath is the best to achieve this. A deep breath gives the baby some good oxygen boost and at the same time alerts or acts as a sign of asking for assistance. Taking a deep breath after contraction will help eliminate residual tension.
Light breathing is shallow and weightless. Light breathing during parturient should begin slowly and syncopate to the rhythm of the contractions. The frequency and intensity of contractions during parturient guides the silent inhalations and the loud exhalations. The breathing rate accelerates at the peak of each spasm. As the contractions' intensity decreases, the breathing becomes slower and the parturient cycle is closed with a deep breath.
Variable breathing is applicable when a parturient woman is unable to relax, feels tired and overwhelmed. The woman takes light and quick breaths during contraction and at some point, the woman takes long noisy exhalations so as to discharge tension. When contraction is over, the mother should return to deep and exaggerated breathing.

During the parturient stage, breathing is used to help the mother to gain strength to push the baby especially in the second stage of labor. The focus is on the moving out the baby and the breathing is determined by the point of labor. A deep breath is essential at the beginning of the spasm as it relaxes the body. During contractions, deep breathing is recommended. Slow breathing is used to maintain relaxation or when moving and walking become difficult for the mother. During slow breathing, the mother should close her eyes and focus on the tensed muscles. While breathing in, the mother should take into consideration the dilating of the nostrils. She should breath in and take a pause before breathing out.
