Introduction

Los Angeles International Airport is one of the best CA airport. It serves as the primary airport serving the Greater Los Angeles Area, the second most populated metropolitan area in the United States of America. It is most often referred by its IATA airport code, LAX, with the letters individually pronounced. Los Angeles International CA airport is located in the southwestern part of Los Angeles, in the neighborhood of Westchester, 16 miles from the downtown core and the primary airport, the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), an agency of the Los Angeles city government, formerly known as the Department of Airports.

Airport details

Los Angeles International Airport is the busiest CA airport, according to statistics from 2011. The airport occupies over 14 hundred hectares of the city from the Pacific coast, about 15 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. Due to its position (near the Pacific coast), weather condition is often changing. Thus requiring that the flights to be diverted to Los Angeles Ontario International Airport (another CA airport, it is localized at about 75 kilometers to the east, inside the continent). The CA airport Los Angeles International remains the largest and busiest airport in California, with a passenger count of almost 62 million people (2011 statistics) and a number of aircraft operations up to over 600 thousand (also 2011 statistics).

History

In 1928, the Los Angeles City Council selected a number of hectares in the southern part of Westchester as the site of the new city airport. The fields of wheat, barley and lima beans were converted into dirt landing strips without any terminal buildings. The real estate agent who arranged the deal was lucky enough to even give the name of the CA airport - Mines Field from William W. Mines. Mines Field was dedicated and opened as the official airport of Los Angeles in 1930, and the city purchased it to be a municipal airfield in 1937. The name was officially changed to Los Angeles Airport in 1941 and to Los Angeles International Airport in 1949. In 1981 the airport began a $700 million expansion in preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics To streamline traffic flow and ease congestion the U-shaped roadway leading to the terminal entrances was given a second level, with the lower level for arriving passengers and the upper level for departing. Connector buildings between the ticketing areas and the satellite buildings were added, changing the gate layout to a "pier" design and completely enclosing the facilities.

The “X” from LAX

Before 1930 all airports used a two letter abbreviation based on the weather stations placed at the respective airports. Los Angeles Airport had the abbreviation LA at that time. But with the rapid growth in the aviation industry the designations expanded to three letters so in 1947 LA became LAX, although the X has no specific meaning in this identifier. LAX is also used for the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro and by Amtrak for Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. Also LAX handles a lot of the traffic from South US.
