Conventional monitors might connect to desktop computers via the VGA or video graphics array cable that is usually colored blue. Even if you disconnect the cable from the video card on the back of a desktop computer, you can still use the monitor for display purposes on any other function desktop tower.

The display on a laptop is slightly different, in that the original equipment manufacturer connects the monitor directly to the motherboard or main board inside the PC before it leaves the factory. After owners obtain the laptop from a local retailer or online retailer, he or she can generally only use that monitor on the original computer. Although, if the display monitor on a laptop computer should malfunction, owners can easily send the system in for a repair, where a technician will remove and replace the monitor will a new display unit.
