What Is Prostrate Cancer?

Introduction

Cancer prostrate problems begin in the prostrate gland and spread to other areas of the male reproductive and urinary systems. The cancer generally occurs in men over the age of 60 but may strike as early as 40 years of age. For men with family histories of the disease, getting regular health checkups can help doctors locate the cancer early. When found in the earliest stages, the survival rate increases. Men who do not fall into this risk factor can still see a physician.

Symptoms

Cancer of the prostrate has a number of symptoms men should look out for. Although the symptoms are common, not every man will experience them.

  • Problems Urinating: Men may feel the urge to urinate but only produce small amounts of urine. They may have difficulty getting started or dribble once they do. Sometimes men will continue to leak urine right after going to the bathroom. This may lead to embarrassing episodes of incontinence.
  • Urine with Blood: The urine may contain small amounts of blood, appear cloudy or smell unusual. Blood in the urine is not always a sign of cancer prostrate issues. It may be a sign of an urinary infection or sexually transmitted disease. It is very important to immediately seek medical advice this case.
  • Semen with Blood: Semen in men with cancer prostrate may see blood during ejaculation. This may not occur every time but when it does, it can be alarming.
  • Pain in the Pelvis: Pain may occur in the pelvis or lower back. This symptom generally only occurs when the cancer has spread from the prostrate to the pelvic region.

Men who get regular exams and blood work completed may find the cancer early. In most cases, diagnostic testing like these spot the cancer before it causes prostrate cancer symptoms. Doctors typically perform blood testing called a PSA test. The test specifically looks for problems of the prostrate gland.

Along with age, men of African American descent may be more susceptible to prostrate cancer problems than others. Those with family members, such as a brother or father, are also at risk. Anyone exposed to certain farming chemicals may be at risk. Eating a fatty diet may influence the cancer.

Treating prostrate cancer depends on the cancer's stage and person. When found in the early stages, surgery and radiation therapy may be used to kill the dangerous cells. Older men may need more testing or biopsies of the prostrate gland. Treatments can interfere with sexual functions as well as the ability to control urine. Many cases may be cured if the cancer is found before it spreads. Men may want to seek counseling if they have difficulties handling the emotional and physical ramifications associated with cancer prostrate.

Tips

Eating a healthy diet of vegetables and fruits may help prevent problems of the prostrate. Drinking plenty of water to keep the urinary tract clear of infections that may help prevent cancer. Avoiding fatty foods and meat that contains too much fat may decrease the risks for cancer. The best option for having good men's health is to see a doctor for regular male examinations.
