Obstetrics and gynecology is a special field in the medical profession that deals with women health care. Infectious diseases in obstetrics and gynecology are those diseases that can be contracted by women, and can be treated by professionals in this field. There are classified as congenital infections, peri natal infections and post natal infections respectively. These infections may be treated easily while others may cause death to the unborn child. An acronym for infections that may be contracted during the congenital stage is TORCH which stands for; toxoplasmolis, other infections, rubella, cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus. These are transmitted to the foetus from the mother.

Infectious diseases in obstetrics and gynecology that can be transmitted during the peri natal stage are usually sexually transmitted diseases that include gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes simplex, human papilloma virus and HIV aids.

There are also infectious diseases in obstetrics and gynecology that can be passed on to the child after child birth including HIV aids. This are transmitted through breastfeeding.

Infectious diseases in obstetrics and genecology that affect women in general and specifically fall under gynecology are classified into two categories: those that originate in the lower reproductive tract or those originating from the upper reproductive tract. Some of the common infections are vulvitis, vaginitis, cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease. Most of the diseases in this category display signs and symptoms and most of them are treatable using over the counter drugs. A good number of the infectious diseases in obstetrics and gynecology are transmitted sexually and immediate treatment should be sought.

Some of the early signs of infections in obstetrics and gynecology are discomforts in the lower region of the stomach, stomach aches, an unusual discharge from the vagina that may be smelly and heavy, discomfort or pain during intercourse, a burning sensation on the private parts when urinating, genital warts and wounds, scratching on the private parts and difficulty passing urine.
