What Are Disorders Mental?

Introduction

Having a disorders mental is becoming more and more common in the United States. At one time, when you a had a mental disorder, depending on what kind it was you were put in an institution. This has become outdated as advances on medicine have come into play and more doctors understand them. There have also been more medicines that have been developed to help a person with a mental disorder.

History

Many times the exact reason for disorders mental is not exactly clear, but it is believed to run in families. Remember saying that your great uncle was crazy, well; your assumption might not have been far off. There are a lot of disorders mental that do run in families. A mental disorder is more of what is not considered to be normal for most people in society as a whole. There is not clear and cut rule that says who is and who is not going to have a mental disorder. There have been great strides in the treatment of disorders mental from the Great Depression to now. Before the Great Depression, people who were thought to be mental were put in insane asylums because this was thought to be the safest place for them. During the Great Depression however, money ran out and people were put out into the streets because there was not enough money and the staff was shorthanded. It was thought that people with mental illnesses should and could act just like normal people and it was mainly an act that a person with a mental illness was only trying to get attention.

Features

During the 20th century, scientist started to explore the brain more and found out that yes, disorders mental were very real and people needed help not to be treated like outcast of society. In 1946, the Hill -Burton Act was started to update hospitals and institutions. This was some help to mental patients. In 1949 The National Institute of mental health was started. After World War II it was then know that soldier’s were suffering from being in war and this was the first sign of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, better known today as PTSD. In the 60’s and 70’s there was a big debate that disorders mental even existed and Politician’s wanted to brush the problem under the rug. In today’s society it is understood that mental disorders are very real and that some of them can be controlled with medications and therapy. No longer do we see the need for electric shock therapy, but just being able to talk to someone who has an understanding of mental issues can be a relief to those that are suffering.

Tips and comments

The thing to remember if you are one suffering from disorders mental is to talk to someone. There are test that can be run to determine what is wrong with you and to get you the help you need. If one doctor says no, then seek the advice of another. There have been great strides in mental illnesses over the years but America as a whole has a long way to go.
