It is a health condition that affects the way a person thinks, behaves, and interacts with other people. Generally, it is accepted that it involves disturbance of thought, experiences, and emotions that cause functional incapacity. It becomes difficult for this person to maintain relationships or carry on their jobs that leads to destructive behavior. The exact cause of mental illness is not known. Research shows that many of these conditions are caused by a combination of genetic, psychological, and environmental factors.

People with depressive order may not be able to care for themselves. Others with certain types of anxiety are not capable of leaving the house and resort to compulsive rituals to lessen their fears. Once a person loses touch with reality and sees their world differently from normal experience episodes of psychosis. Their ability to understand the things happening around them is affected. It may also involve delusions, like false beliefs or guilt. The person hears, smells, or sees things that are not present. It can be threatening and confusing to other people around. This behavior is hard to comprehend for people who are not familiar with it. It helps when a community is educated and grasps the idea of what mental illness really is and how it can be treated.

For others it may recur throughout their lifetime and needed ongoing treatment.


To prevent getting into this condition it is best to promote healthy attitudes from childhood to adult life. Learn ways to deal with stress in different situations and events. Avoid risk factors such as harmful alcohol and drug abuse. Risk of suicide is high for people with mental illness after diagnosis or release from the hospital. It is essential to become sensitive to signs and the support system should always be there.

The family members are the closest people who can help any person experiencing any of this illness. Their understanding and support that they can give to admit their condition and allow to receive treatment is very crucial. For professional assistance, you may seek help from a general practitioner or from the community mental health center. Check your local listings for phone numbers of facilities which can help you get better. Others needed medication and continuous treatment and counseling. People with mental illness need the same care given to a person with a physical illness.
