In the 60’s the racism movement was in full swing and this was the time when Harper Lee took the bold step of publishing her thought provoking novel. The novel is set in a time when racism was a core issue and black men and women were treated as slaves with no rights. It shows how even in the 1920’s when colored people didn’t have any rights of their own, there were some people like Atticus Finch who were taking care of their rights. She also tries to portray that not all white men or women are evil. "To Kill a Mockingbird" also builds on the narrative that United States of America has a dark history and a number of people were victimized during that time while some tried their level best to neutralize this treatment.

The book is about the story of a girl who is living with her father, brother and a colored maid. She is very attached to her father and he is a heroic figure in her life. Mr. Atticus Finch who later on turns out to be the star character of the novel shows how some people who are right can change the perception of the whole community. Mr. Finch decides to defend a young black man who has been accused of raping a white girl. The whole community revolts against him and his family but he maintains his character. Despite strong criticism from other people in the community Mr. Atticus Finch stands tall and this is the beauty of "To Kill a Mockingbird".

Tips and comments

If anyone wants to know what America was like in the early twentieth century during the infamous great depression, "To Kill a Mockingbird" sketches the best picture for all. It also highlights how the black community was always blamed for everything that went wrong and how justice was denied to them. It also gives a lesson that there should be no discrimination among humans on the basis of color and race. In a nutshell this novel is a must read for every one and full credit should be given to Harper Lee for this exceptional piece of writing.
