How To Prevent a Bird Strike

Introduction

Bird strikes are the reason for many airplane accidents and alarm and anxiety among the airplane officials. Airplanes have been designed and provided with many control measures and safety procedures to avoid any issues from bird strike, but it is still a risk factor.

Step 1

The main reason birds are attracted to the airports is due to the vast unused land around them that strikes resemblance to their natural habitat. This land is kept this way to be used as a noise buffer but this backfires in the terms of increase in wildlife. So the best way to avoid any bird strike around the airports is to make the surrounding area unsuitable for them, so that they leave the place. Whatever type of birds the local area has must have some habitat specifications. If these are destroyed, the risk of bird strike will be minimized.

Step 2

The second best way to avoid any colonization of birds around the airport is to eliminate any food sources of these birds that might be present in the area. This can be done by removing any seed bearing plants for herbivorous birds. If the insect eating birds are more common then use pesticides and insecticides on the nearby vegetation to kill all the insects that might living there, these things must be done to avoid a bird strike.

Step 3

Most of the airports have large ponds or other kinds of water bodies around them as well, which are again very good to absorb all types of immense noises that originate from the airport. But if there are any birds flocks around that prefer water then the bird strike rates are likely to increase. The best preventive measure is to cover the ponds or water bodies of other kind with net, so that the birds cannot land in water. Also, remove tall brushes and trees that can serve as a nesting place for the birds.

Step 4

One good way to avoid bird strike is to modify the bird behaviors of the birds that are present in that area. These behaviors can be easily modified without harming the birds for example by using lasers at dusk and dawn to scare them off, allow pet falcons to fly above and dogs to roam below, making the birds feel that the area has many predators and other ways like these.

Step 5

The last step that has to be followed to avoid any bird strikes is to modify the planes behavior as well. This can be done by monitoring the dense areas of bird population through scopes and binoculars and planning the planes in such a way that they avoid those areas.
