Introduction

Birds can cause a lot of damage to property. Different types of birds are present in different
localities and the varying species feed on specific kind of plants. As a result, birds can incur
huge losses for farmers growing crops. These birds are referred to as pests. They can also
cause crop diseases. It’s not just farmers who are affected by birds. Homeowners and
municipality authorities are also fed up with the damage they cause. This can be due to the
droppings and the diseases they carry. Thus bird proofing becomes essential to curb this
problem.

With the advancements that have occurred in technology, newer methods have been
developed to keep birds away from land and property. The traditional methods of keeping
birds away include the spraying of pesticides, scare crows, using thorns etc. However, now
electronic devices have been invented to serve this purpose. These devices are known as bird spikes.

A bird spike consists of long rods that resemble needles. It is also referred to as an anti-roosting
spike or roost modification. Birds feel frightened by the spikes and so the device effectively keeps them away. Bird spikes come in varying lengths and widths. The width of the bird spikes usually ranges from 5” to 8”. When installing bird spikes it is best to measure the width of the area that is supposed to be shielded. The best thing to do when considering the area that is to be covered, is to choose the whole section where birds usually settle.

The bird controlling devices are pinned to the ground using screws. This is a task that can be performed by you. You can read the manual that comes along with the device and get your job done. If you are unable to do so then you can call a technician. However, the chances that you would not be able to figure it out are very few. The bird cannot see these bird spikes. These remain unnoticeable and thus landing birds won’t be able to find a way around them. In addition to this the spikes do not take away from the aesthetic value of the property since they are almost invisible. The land is not the only area where the spikes can be installed. You can put the devices in place on ledges, sign boards, buildings etc. The bird spikes that keep birds at bay may be made of either plastic or steel. In either case, they will produce the same results.

Tips and comments

Bird spikes keep birds away because they prick this tiny creature. This method is both effective and economical. These steel structures are very sturdy and thus have a longer life. This also means that bird spikes have low maintenance costs. Installing bird spikes will ensure that the loss incurred as a result of the damage caused by birds is kept at a minimum.
