Windows Movie Maker for the current Windows OS (Windows 7) is called Windows Live Movie Maker, which is included in the Windows Live Essentials pre-installed on your computer or you can download it from Microsoft's official website. Windows Movie Maker in Windows 7 has similar features to previous versions of Windows Movie Maker, but Windows Live Movie Maker has more features, such as the ability to upload more audio and video types and using a webcam to capture video. The type of movies you can play in Windows Movie Maker are AVI, FLV, WMV, 3GP, 3G2, MOV, DVR-MS, MPG, M4V, M2T, M2TS, MP2, ASF, MP4, and 3GPP.

Step 5

Click the blue triangle on the left side of the screen. This is the button you press to play a movie on Windows Movie Maker. Test out the video by pressing "Play" in the software program. You want to know if the movie works or not. Just because your video may be compatible with Windows Movie Maker does not mean it will play. Sometimes certain movies will not play because of other reasons, such as the video codec is broken or other issues with video playback. If your video works, you have successfully played your movie in the Windows Movie Maker software program.
