What is a Periodontal Disease?

Are Periodontal Diseases Avoidable?

Periodontal diseases or gum diseases are common mouth problems to many. The disease extends from a simple gum irritation to a more serious gum disease resulting in a great damage to soft tissue and the bone that surrounds the teeth which causes teeth loss. However, these periodontal diseases are avoidable.

Gum diseases usually develop because of improper brushing and flossing . The bacteria that are found in the mouth begin to affect the surrounding bones and gum tissues as a result of poor oral habit.

Two Kinds of a Gum Disease

Are Periodontal Diseases Avoidable?

Signs of periodontal disease vary and it has two types of periodontal diseases that are common and you need to be aware of in order to maintain good oral health.
1.) Gingivitis

This is the early stage of a gum disease. It is a very mild strain and the most common manifestation of a gum disease. So mild that it goes unnoticed for so long. You may have already been noticing some bleeding of your gums after brushing, bad breaths, and some swelling in the gums that hurts easily when touched and a soft gum tissue, then these may be signs of gingivitis.

The causes of gingivitis vary, and usually include:

• Improper or infrequent brushing and flossing
• Plaque that are trapped in places that are hard to reach, such as wisdom teeth.
• Smoking

2.) Periodontitis

This is more serious and a lot more damaging infection. Periodontitis can infect one’s jawbone, destroy gum tissue and leads to losing your teeth.

Periodontitis begins with a plaque, a sticky film that is mainly composed of bacteria. Plaque builds in the teeth when sugar and starch in food interact with the bacteria found in your mouth. Brushing removes the plaque, but it re-builds quickly within 24 hours. The plaque that stays in your teeth longer than two or three days may harden the gumline and becomes a tartar.
Tartar makes the plaque more difficult to remove. Usually, you can’t get rid of it by simply brushing and flossing. You need a professional dental cleaning to have it removed.
