Herpes Virus
Herpes viruses are one of the causes of human viral disease, second only to influenza and cold viruses. They are capable of causing a manifestation of disease or remaining silent for many years only to be reactivated in the years to come, for instance as shingles.
There are eight or more herpes virus types that frequently infect an individual. These are:
• Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1)
• Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2)
• Epstein Barr Virus (EBV)
• Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
• Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV)
• Human herpes Virus 6 (exanthum subitum or roseola infantum)
• Human Herpes Virus 8 (Kaposi’s sarcoma-associate herpes virus)
When a person has been infected by the herpes diseases virus, the infection remains for life.
Nature and Common Sites of Herpes (HSV) Infections
The nature of herpes viruses is similar to having cold sores, they get better, but the person is not aware that the viruses stay on. When the virus enters the body of an individual and that person makes contact with another, the virus can sneak into the second person by slipping into mucous-skin cells. They can also sneak into the tiniest cuts and abrasions in the skin.
When herpes diseases infection affects the human, they cause inflammation such as bumps, tenderness and redness. The virus stays in the host body the antibodies may respond to the virus, it may suppress the virus but not kill it. The virus retreat into other nerve cells and they stay there until another opportunity to strike comes up.
The most common sites of herpes infection are in and around the mouth. Cold sores are tender bumps that hurt when eating and sometimes it temporarily disfigures the face. The sore will get better after a few days but the virus stays and can recur anytime.
The eyes can also get infected (herpes keratitis), and can lead to blindness if not treated promptly.
The brain may also be infected (herpes encephalitis) which can cause permanent damage. Herpes diseases encephalitis usually attacks the temporal lobe.
Disease Caused by Herpes Virus
Genital Herpes diseases is one of the types of a sexually transmitted disease caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV). Herpes infections in the genital area spread through vaginal, oral, or anal sex, especially from unprotected sex with an infected individual. When infectious skin touches the vaginal, oral or anal area the virus is transmitted.
Presently, there’s no remedy for genital herpes, but antiviral medicines such as Acyclovir may be given to control the spread and lessen the sores.
Prevention of Herpes Viruses and Diseases that Cause the Virus
Prevention of the diseases that are caused by herpes viruses is very important. If signs such as tingling, itching, and tenderness as well as burning sensation occur in any parts of the body, then don’t let other people get in contact with the infected area. People with mouth lesions, should avoid kissing and sharing cups, lipsticks or lip balms.
For people with genital herpes, there’s only one preventive measure and the only successful way to avoid the spread of infection that is abstinence. Herpes can be extremely contagious even with contraceptives like condoms. Avoid sharing towels and clothing exchange.
