Introduction

Poverty and mental disorders sometimes go hand in hand. The ratio between mental health and homelessness is directly proportional. Poor mental health can cause poverty (which may lead to homelessness) and homelessness may cause poor mental health. Many research programs have been conducted to study the relationship between homelessness mental health. They conclude that almost 40 percent of homeless people suffer from some sort of mental illness.

History

There are three basic needs of every person, food, clothing, and shelter. These are recognized as the bare necessities for sustenance of life. Homeless people have neither food, nor clothing, nor shelter. This utterly deplorable state of poverty definitely takes its toll on the mind. Homeless people have feelings of unworthiness. Poverty is like a cage. This cage may not be visible but poverty locks down an person into a wretched existence. This leads to severe depression. Not only does poverty cause a general degeneration in the body, but it also causes tremendous mental stress and anxiety. This proves that mental health homelessness are closely related.

Homeless people are often treated as a nuisance. They are often arrested for sleeping in public places. They battle it out in the harsh weather where everybody else has cozy places to live in. Often, all this causes some homeless people to turn to crime. For the homeless, crime serves two purposes. It helps them to get hold of some cash (thefts, pick pocketing) and it allows them an opportunity to take revenge on a seemingly unforgiving society. This is a commonly observed mental condition among the homeless. It provides a valuable insight between the relationship of homelessness mental health. Also, homeless people turn to substance abuse in search of some solace from the troubles of life. Alcoholism, drugs, and smoking has adverse effects on the physical and mental condition of such people.

Homelessness mental health are closely interlinked. Mentally challenged people are unable to secure proper education. In some developed countries, the government provided at least some facilities for the mentally ill. However, such facilities are not available in the poorer nations of the world. In such countries, people who are mentally ill are often abandoned by their families as they prove to be a burden. Such people wander on the streets and scavenge for food near garbage bins. There are numerous incidents which report that a mentally challenged girl or woman was raped. Such occurrences further contribute in the deterioration of mental health among the homeless.

There is a strong relation between homelessness mental health.this is because of the fact that mentally challenged people are unable to support themselves financially. Since, mentally challenged people are not able to secure proper education. they face many problems with employment. There is no commercial organization in the world which has reservations for employment of the mentally challenged.
