Getting Care For Mental Health Child

Introduction

Child mental health is gained recognition and importance in recent years. Earlier, society was insensitive to mental disorders in children. Children who had problems in studies were considered to be lazy. Adolescents who had mental and emotional problems were thought to be whimsical. However, this is no more the case today. Child mental health is a top priority in most schools, colleges and other organizations which deal with children.

History

Often, problems in child mental health arise and deteriorate due to neglect from parents and from society in general. Parents are so stressed with their lives that they do not have time to worry about the mental and emotional condition of their children. Their busy lifestyle hardly ever allows them to share a proper conversation with their children. Many parents take it for granted that children cannot become depressed as they have many activities to keep them busy. However, this is far from the truth. Child mental health is largely a result of what a child perceives in his surroundings. Young minds are very impressionable and thus parents need to be extra careful with what they say in front of their children. A healthy relationship between parents and children eliminates any fears or insecurities that a child may have. Children’s minds are only in the developmental stage and it is the duty of parents and teachers to ensure that children grow in a healthy, stress-free atmosphere. This has a positive impact on child mental health.

Features

Many times, child mental health is affected by ignorance and impatience on part of parents and teachers. Most teachers are overworked and underpaid. This causes them to become irritated and insensitive towards children. Parents want their children to be super heroes. This kind of mentality is often observed in parents who are not satisfied with their own achievements in life. They force their beliefs and philosophies upon their young children. They want their kids to be all that they couldn’t. This creates a psychological pressure on the children and this extremely detrimental to child mental health. Children become overwhelmed with responsibilities and feel burdened. If this continues, then the pent up pressure explodes in the form of a rebellious mentality or worse still – a submissive, fragile mindset. Allowing the child’s personality to develop naturally is one of the major aspects of child mental health. One cannot force a flower to bloom before time.

Tips and Comments

Paying attention to your child’s problems will help you to tackle mental disorders at an early age – if at all they are present. Many children suffer from mental conditions like dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Dyslexia is a problem that prevents a child from reading normally. The words and numbers appear to be scattered all over the page. This causes the child to lose interest in studies as the pages make no sense to him. Attention deficit disorder prevents a child from concentrating. These conditions often go unnoticed and the children suffering from them are labeled as ‘dim witted’. Proper counseling and attention can help to improve child mental health in such cases. If a particular child has complex mental disorders, then admission into a school for the mentally challenged is perhaps the best option.
