Mental Health And Suicide: Recognizing the Warning Signs

Introduction

Mental health suicide can be defined as the act of harming or trying to kill oneself. According to experts in the field of mental health, suicide and metal condition are related to a greater extent. Majority of those who attempted suicide or are contemplating it have some or the other mental health problems. Depression and mood change problems are the most common issues associated to mental health suicide. But in most cases the individuals leave some warning signs while they are thinking about suicide or before attempting suicide. If a person who has mental health issues and is thinking about suicide is identified early, he or she can be brought back to normal life with a professional’s help.

History

The cases of mental health suicide have prevailed from time immemorial. Majority of the time a person who went to the doctor with suicidal tendencies has a long history of mental illness. Stress is also one of the major issues leading to mental health suicide. Those who have a history of depression, panic attacks, anxiety should be looked for such warning signs either by the family, loved ones or friends. The earlier the medical help is sought, the better the chances are for an individual to recover from the problems, which would protect the person from committing mental health suicide. Experts also say that most of the people who die of suicide have at least one or more mental health problems. Doctors say that the number of individuals attempting suicide all over the world is increasing day by day, but the number of women attempting suicide is decreasing.

We have been talking about the warning signs of suicide and many would be wondering what signs that one would exhibit when he is under depression that might lead to suicide? Suppose if one of our friends or colleagues says that he or she will not be around, in a more threatening way, or asking others to learn living without them, it can be a serious warning sign. The other signs of mental health suicide include changes in ones personality all of a sudden; someone is giving away valuable possessions, suddenly taking up some daring activities that are highly risky, showing no interest in future, expressing a sense of helplessness and being hopeless. It is also said that people who threaten of suicide or who spoke about it are more likely to attempt it.

Tips and comments

• If you feel that a person, whom you know, is showing some warning signs that might lead to mental health suicide, be open about it.
• It would be better if you talk about your feelings to the person; listen to what he or she has to tell about the issue. While listening to them do not try to appear shocked or be judgmental. While talking to the person try to find out whether the person has a plan to suicide and if the plan is well laid out then there are greater chances of the person attempting mental health suicide.
• It would be best to seek professional help even if the person refuses to do.
• If you counter such problems with anyone do not attempt to counsel the person all by yourself. Only a professional will be able to identify the underlying cause of a person’s mental health.
