What Does a Social Worker Mental Health Do?

Introduction

Mental health problems are still a social taboo and people are reluctant to be open about their problems. The major role of a social worker mental health is to deal with these issues. A social worker will talk to the affected individual about the problems and help him on how to deal the issue. The social worker will also talk about the rehabilitation that needs to be given for a person having mental problems. A social worker mental health actually helps people who have issues in identifying their own problems and they also have to keep an eye on the issue of discrimination due to mental health problems.

History

Social workers have been working on the field of mental health problems from time immemorial. In ancient times it was done in a much smaller and less organized way, whereas now we have graduates and postgraduates, who specialize in social work, coming to this field. The first social worker mental health was appointed in 1920 to the Tavistoc clinic. In the ancient times the social workers gave more importance to those treatments that did not require hospitalization and mostly without medicines. A social worker mental health works by giving individual counseling, creating awareness in the community, counseling the people around the person having mental health problems to avoid discrimination and bring the person back to life. Historically the social workers play a great role to co-ordinate and provide all the facilities to people suffering from mental health problems.

A social worker mental health should know about all aspects of mental health and its problems. He or she should be aware of all the major syndromes, all classifications of psychiatry, how they can be identified. The social worker mental health should also be aware of the history of mental health problems, how is it important in a society and how can they be dealt with. The main aim of the social worker mental health is to bring back the well being of the community, family and the individual and to boost the development of the individuals to provide social well being for themselves and the community.

Due to the active work of the social worker mental health many people who receive their help are not facing rejection from the society. They are being included into the society with the support received from the social workers. Different programs that are aimed at making the patient more independent are carried out by the social workers. Most people say that these programs have a great positive outcome. While dealing with a person with problems of mental health the social worker has to use different strategies depending on the age and the problem of the patient. For many, even if they are out of the mental health problem, they will still lack the confidence to appear in public and will also have the fear of being rejected by the society. In such situations the social worker has a great role in boosting the confidence of the patient. The social worker is involved in all stages of the problem, right from the beginning when issues are identified.
