What Is Google Finance?

Google Finance is a free, comprehensive Web-based financial news service that is offered by Google. Google Finance provides information about stock markets and data transactions concerning companies participating in the stock market. The information provided by Google Finance is mainly from the Google News service.

Google's news service incorporates news from over 4,000 news sources. With it you can also track and maintain your personal portfolios of mutual funds and stocks of the various companies. There is a compilation of company stories that are listed in the specific company pages.

Google Finance employs the use of charts for analysis. To be able to view the charts your computer must have meet some minimum requirements. To use the charts you must have installed Adobe Flash Player 7.0+, but for best performance you may use Flash Player 9 or a higher one. Adobe Flash Player plugs in is found for free at the Adobe website .

How to Access Google Finance

Accessing Google Finance has very many options. You may go directly to the Google Finance homepage. You can also search for an exchange ticker mark on Google and scroll to the chart. Searching for Google Finance brings you results which if you click on the link you will be directed to the Google Finance homepage. The ticker symbols that are located on your desktop sidebar can also be used for access. You use them by clicking on them

Google Finance participation requires that you must have a user portfolio. To create a Google Finance portfolio, you need a Google account. After creating a Google account, just visit the Google Finance page, click the portfolio and then click on create portfolio. Complete the process by naming your portfolio and then clicking Ok.

When you want to add a company to your portfolio, just click on "add to portfolio" and the company is added. Creation of a Google Finance portfolio means that you can participate in the stock information service. Google Finance is also simplified and self-explanatory and thus presents few complications when you're signing up.

Sections of Google Finance

Google Finance has seven sections which are used in analyzing the stocks and financial data. There is market summary and sector summary which lists active companies by comparing them in terms of volume, market cap change and stock popularity. There is the trends section which shows which companies have had the biggest changes on the market. A discussion forum is also present which gives you the chance to talk about and exchange ideas concerning particular stocks and market information. There is also a recent quotes section on the Google Finance homepage that displays information about the company stocks that you have looked at recently. 

A charting blog is also present. Companies use it to blog about their market situation. A news section helps in giving users timely business news. The last section on the Google Finance homepage is the help section. Here you are offered help for all issues pertaining creation of stocks and their monitoring.
