What Is Considered Part Time in Jobs?

Introduction

A job seeker must always be aware of the laws covering both full-time and part-time jobs. Company owners also bear the responsibility of being aware of the laws. It is seen that part-timers add greater flexibility to a business.

Employers generally maintain a pool of part-timers to cover the demanding shifts. Working part-time gives you that extra time to pursue other activities. Generally full time work is where you get to work the maximum number of legal hours, typically 40 hours a week in most places. But the quantitative distinction determining the number of work hours to distinguish full and part time in jobs varies from company to company. Part timers may be voluntary ones, those who prefer that style of work. Involuntary part timers are those still in the hunt of a full time status job and are kept in a probationary state by the company.

Consider a case where the company declares a 40 hour work commitment to be considered full time and the employer keeps you on a 35 hour work schedule to maintain your job status as part-time. This might be the case in places where the companies try to limit the employees in the full time benefit slot.

Working part-time jobs surely provides the extra income and schedule flexibility in your life which can be utilized to pursue other activities. It suits you if you are a working mom or a college student, but in most cases, you will not be entitled to the benefits of a full-time job like healthcare, sick pay, vacation leave, pension funds.

Most full-time jobs are very demanding and an exceeding amount of commitment is required to work full-time jobs. The reward for a full-time job usually comes in the form of salary which can be disadvantageous because most full time job contracts offer a fixed compensation not considering the extra hours in work. So keeping aside the benefits it is possible that a person doing part time in jobs may receive the same salary as a full time one with greater flexibly.

If you are well-compensated and enjoy the extra flexibility, then go after part-time jobs. Very often those part-time jobs serve as multiple income streams. More and more companies are setting up schemes for part time work. Many part timers are able to get the employee benefits of a full timer on prorate basis. Another plan being adopted by many companies is to offer health care benefits even to the part time employees after the completion of certain minimum number of work hours. The U.S government through its ERISA law demands that any employee whether full time or doing part time in jobs be included in retirement benefits after working for 1000 hours in a one year period.
