Introduction

If you love food or enjoy cooking, you may want to consider becoming a cook. Whether you are just out of high school or making a mid-life career change, following your dreams and passions can lead to a lifetime of happiness. Because there is so much diversity in the world when it comes to food, there are many different types of cook jobs you can aspire to. Here is a look at some them.

Restaurant Cooks

Many people who love to cook aspire to own their own restaurant, but they may have to gain some experience and save money before they can do that. There are many different culinary schools you can go to to learn how to cook, but some say working in a restaurant setting is the best experience you can have before attempting to open your own restaurant.

Some of the most basic cook jobs involve working at popular fast food and chain restaurants. Working in a fast food or chain restaurant may mean fairly monotonous work, because you will be cooking the same things over and over again and in some cases, just heating up precooked food. However, these types of jobs teach you to think fast and stay organized, and they will give you an understanding of what it's like to serve customers. You will also learn about the many requirements related to health codes and restaurant cleanliness.

If you choose to work in a non-chain restaurant, there may be two different roles to fill if you want to be a cook. These are usually referred to as the sous chef and executive chef. The sous chef is sometimes referred to as an entry level position in the restaurant business. You will report to the executive chef and spend your days prepping food and cooking under the executive chef's watchful eye. You may also fill in for the executive chef when he or she is absent.

The executive chef is often considered the manager of a restaurant's kitchen. He or she will oversee everything that goes on in the kitchen and make sure the food cooked and served is up to restaurant standards. The executive chef may also play a role in deciding what new dishes are served at the restaurant.

Other Culinary Jobs

Being a cook does not always mean working in a restaurant. Cooks find jobs in hospitals, schools, assisted living homes, hotels, country clubs, personal homes, culinary schools, on movie and television sets, in corporate offices and in almost any other place where food is served. Some cooks work in grocery and department stores doing demonstrations for customers. If you prefer to be your own boss but do not want to open a restaurant, you may even decide to start a catering business. This will have you cooking and traveling to various events such as weddings, showers, parties, birthdays, family reunions, churches and much more.

Some people who like to cook have a passion for a specific kind of cooking and seek jobs that allow them to utilize their talents. For example, some people only like to bake pastries and sweet treats. Some may even decide they prefer the health aspects of cooking and become nutritionists or someone who helps others get healthy. Some even travel around the world to learn about the cooking habits of various cultures.
