History

Situated approximately 157 miles away from the capital city of Delhi, this white colored marble structure entombs Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Every year Agra draws in millions of travelers from different parts of the world that come in search of this eternal “epitome of love”.
 
As per the legends, this building was constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (during 1631 to 1653) in the memory of Mumtaz Mahal, his beloved wife who was a symbol of timeless beauty. After the death of his wife, the emperor was determined to capture her lost beauty in the form of this imperial tomb. It took 22 years to complete Taj and approximately 20,000 workers were hired to erect it. The total cost of its construction was estimated to be about 32 million INR in 16th century, which was quite lavish!

The charismatic Taj appears to reflect unique combinations of colors during sunrise and sunset. These color variations are symbolic of changing moods of a woman, which was a marked characteristic of Late Mumtaz Begum. 28 different varieties of precious gemstones and metals were used in assembling the inner halls and galleries of Taj.

Asian, Islamic and Persian designs were blended to erect this structure. The architectural tomb is divided into 5 well-defined sections: the main gate (Darwaza), the mosque (The Masjid), the mausoleum (Rauza), the rest house (Naqqar Khana) and the lush green manicured lawns separated by an array of pristine blue puddles.
