How To Setup Computers on a Network

Introduction

The Internet is the fastest growing and the most volatile source of information as well as an entertainment center. With over millions of resources to be found online, most people have resulted to using the Internet as their number one search zone. However, to enjoy this services fully, you need to set up your computer on a network. Setting up of computers network is not an easy task to a layman however the following points will assist greatly to ease your work load.

Step 1

The first step is to shut down all the computers and the router and leave only one computer that you will require to setup the router. The router comes with a user's manual containing a list of instructions on how to use it. Make sure that you familiarise yourself with these instructions.

Step 2

The next step is to connect separate Ethernet cables to the computers network adapter in each computer. In case you have a wireless computers network, set up the wireless adapter instead.

Step 3

Connect your wired or wireless router to the modem. This gives your computers the Internet access which you want to achieve. Plug in one of the Ethernet cable into your router. This step is for both wireless and wired connections. However,for a wireless computers network connection set up, this stage is temporary. You will be required to disconnect it once the set up is through.

Step 4

Once plugged in, the router will be detected by your computer. Automatically a set up wizard will be launched containing a list of instructions on how to configure your router. Follow these rules diligently and faithfully.

Step 5

After the set up is complete, turn off the router and the computer you used to set it up. However, this process is optional, but it is recommended to do so after every installation in your computer.

Step 6

Connect the Ethernet cables to rest of the computers and to the router and start them up. If you are using a wired computers network, they should automatically detect the network and be ready for use. However,for a wireless computers network connection, some additional log in information may be required. At this stage you can disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router.

Step 7

To set up the additional information on your wireless computers network, navigate your way to control panel on your computer. Click on the network setup wizard and then click twice on “next”. A display result will appear stating that the wizard found disconnected network hardware. Select the ignore disconnected network hardware check box and click on next. Chose this computer to connect to the Internet through a residential gateway option then click next. Select a computer description and name then click on next to follow the remaining set of instructions. Perform a system reboot once you are done.

Step 8

Navigate to drive C and choose sharing and security option. Click on the link that emerges and consent to the check boxes on share this folders on networks and allow users to change my files. Repeat this process subsequently for the other computers.

Conclusion

Your computers network is now successfully installed and ready to use. You can now share files and documents via the network among other functions which your network can support.
