How To Find the Right Ink Cartridges For a Printer

The printer is an essential addition to any home office, especially for any person that works from home. It can even be a cheap addition to the office. The biggest expense comes when it’s time to replace the ink cartridges for your printer. This is only part of the reason why it’s important to find the right ink cartridges for your printer. Another thing to consider is that if you buy the wrong ink cartridges, your printer won’t be able to read them. This will result in your document not printing, or problems in translation such as unreadable text and garbled images.

Step 1

The first thing you’ll need to do is check the make and model of your printer. This is usually labeled on a sticker that can be found on the back, or on the bottom of your printer. It should be fairly visible, but look at the printer carefully.

It’s important to check the Users Manual as well. The Users Manual will tell you the make and model of the printer (if not labeled on the printer), and it will also tell you how to change the ink. It’s important to check, because the process is different with all ink cartridges and every printer, and it’s not always self explanatory.

Step 2

If at all possible, look at the product number on the ink cartridges. Check the printer manual if there is no ink cartridge present. This will help you find the correct ink cartridge for your printer.

Sometimes you won’t be able to buy a specific type of ink cartridge for your printer. Instead, you’ll have to buy a generic or name brand--an ink cartridge that’s designed for several printers. If you find yourself in this situation, make sure you look at the back of the ink cartridges. If it’s compatible with your printer, the model number will be listed on the back of the ink cartridge.

Step 3

When you go shopping, make sure you bring both the ink cartridges product number, and the printers model number with you. Both of these things will be necessary when you’re searching for the correct cartridge. Brand name ink cartridges, for example, may have the compatible printer model number listed, or the compatible ink cartridge product number listed. Be sure to check both if at all possible.

Step 4

Price Matching: A good method to use when buying ink at a retail store is to browse prices. If a certain brand of ink is cheap one place, then you may be able to get another place to match that price. Certain stores will take an additional ten percent off when you price match, it’s all about browsing.

Shop online: You can find just about anything online, and often times items are cheaper online. There are even discounts and coupon codes that can be found online, just be sure to factor in shipping costs and waiting time.

Step 5

Refilling Ink Cartridges: While this option is cheaper, it’s not necessarily the easiest thing to do. Keep in mind that if you do this wrong, you run the risk of ruining your printer--which will cost you more money in the long run.
