The Northern part of the United States does not really come in the picture when one talks about quality colleges but they also have their fair share of good institutes providing quality education. Institutes, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan have emerged as the states with quality state universities north after the civil war. Though they are known more for their freezing weather, one can be rest assured that they will have access to quality education as well.

Public universities

Probably the best among the universities northern states when it comes to quality education, Wisconsin boasts of a high number of both public and private institutes, the University of Wisconsin system is one of the largest public education systems in the country; it has more than 182,000 student enrollments annually. Minnesota and Michigan are also not far behind and produce quality work force that run their industrial economies.

University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh are some of the popular ones among the system's top universities, they specialize in both under graduate and graduate studies in various fields.

Michigan is another state that is not far behind, it has many public universities that offer liberal arts degrees Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University and Ferris State University are among the popular ones.

Having one of the highest high school pass-out rates in the country, Minnesota has a good number of colleges to meet the needs of students of every background. Universities north like Argosy University, Augsbury College and Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University offer unconventional degrees that are not found in other colleges.

Going Private

Private universities north like St. Andrews University in Michigan operated by the Seventh-Day Adventist Church are among the biggest universities in the region and offer a variety of programs including theology. This University also boasts of a very high number of foreign students from throughout the world. There are also a good number of private colleges in Michigan like Kettering University that produce a good number of the state's industrial work force.

6 of Minnesota's private colleges are ranked among the top 100 liberal colleges in the US according to U.S News and World Report. Hamline University ranked 1st in the state and 9th in the country according to the same report.
