What Are Rheumatoid Diseases?
It is sad to know that there is really no cure for the rheumatoid diseases, but it is noted that only infectious rheumatoid arthritis can be cured. People who have them can just take in antibiotics as early as possible. But for the rest of the diseases that are not curable, there are treatments that are meant to limit the inflammation and pain. While these treatments ensure that the inflammation is limited, it also make sure that the joints are still working the same way they should.
Causes of Rheumatoid Diseases
Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disease of the connective tissue that affects the small joints. The causes of these rheumatoid diseases are really unclear even up to this date. Although people say that it could possibly be caused by the increased in number of white blood cells and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, this had not been proven.
Since there are no known and proven cures of rheumatoid diseases, what people are really trying to work on is to make sure that the effects of the disease are manageable. There are different ways to deal with the disease depending on the nature or type of the rheumatoid diseases.
Each treatment program is applied depending on the type of rheumatoid disease. There are some that can only give short-term relief and then there are those treatments meant for long-term relief. For short-term relief plans, you can rely on the heat and cold approach. Some doctors would recommend this for short-term relief for those affected joints. Applying hot compress or hot shower can give some short-term relief from pain of those affected joint. Cold compress is also applied for those joints that show some swelling. There are also medicines that can give short-term relief like ibuprofen. There are other drugs that can be taken as long as you consult your doctor.
You can also do some light massage or stroking on the affected painful joints and muscles. This will not only give you relief but it will also increase blood flow and it can give a warm feeling to the muscles.
Preventing Rheumatoid Diseases Through Long-Term Treatments
Some of these treatments may not totally cure the rheumatoid disease, but this will surely give you lasting relief compared to the ones first mentioned here. There are still medications that can give long-lasting relief, which includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-rheumatic disease-modifying medications, and also corticosteroids. If you are not fond of medicines, then you can try losing weight. Extra weight places extra stress on the joints that are bearing the weight.
You can also do regular low-impact exercise like swimming or walking. These exercises can remove the stiffness and joint pain that has been bothering you. But in the worst cases where rheumatoid disease is already too serious for other treatments, surgery will be able to help. Some patients may have their joints replaced or repaired. This must have the recommendation of the doctor, of course.
