Choosing the Right Bags For Your Apparel

Introduction

When it comes to fashion, nothing makes a statement like the handbag you are carrying. That is why it is essential that the finishing touch to your apparel is your bag. This does not mean that your purse must match your outfit to look good; it means that apparel and bags that complement each other look great. Playing with contrast in materials and colors can turn an everyday outfit and purse into a trendy statement, with little effort from you.

Step 1

Size Matters

In fashion, size matters. The size of your handbag can overpower your outfit or it can complete it. A good rule of thumb with apparel and bags is that the more casual the outfit, the larger the bag can be. For evenings out and special events, a smaller bag or clutch is the best choice.

Step 2

Complementing Colors

Complementing colors work much better than ones that are perfectly matched, so it is not necessary for red apparel and red bags to be used together. When you are wearing bold colors or multicolor outfits, black will allow the colors to stand out without taking away from the look. Save your colored purses for single colored ensembles, such as a stunning red bag to add a burst of color to a black outfit or to complement a blue dress.

Step 3

Material Mistakes

A good purse usually comes in a good material. But when it comes to matching apparel and bags, material mistakes are inevitable. To avoid making a mistake, match material with material. When wearing summery clothing, opt for a bag in lightweight material such as canvas, cotton, or straw. Save the heavy materials such as leather for eveningwear and outfits in heavier material.

Step 4

Shape Shifting

Having the right color, material, and size will do nothing if the shape of your bag overpowers your whole look. Because bags come in a variety of different shapes and styles today, it is important that your apparel and bags give off the right look together. Save your favorite hobo bag for casual and weekend wear and take the tailored bag to work. Although some rules are made to be broken, a classic bowler bag looks good with almost any outfit, casual or dressy.

Step 5

Budget Basics

Fashion comes at a price, and choosing the right handbag is no exception. If you are willing to spend a lot of money, look for an investment rather than a trendy disposable bag. Trends will come and go, in both apparel and bags, so do not waste your money on the latest “must have” unless it is something that you can live with for a long time.

Tips

Although, finding bags to complement your apparel is important, you want to make sure it complements your body shape as well.

If you are larger at the bottom than the top, avoid large bags that hang below the waist, as they will emphasize wide hips.

For thin body types, bulky, large, or floppy bags will add a bit of dimension to your silhouette.

If you are lucky enough to have a nice hourglass figure, then you can play with any size and shape of bag. The only thing to worry about is how to choose the right apparel for your bags.
