Vitamins For Healthy Skin

Introduction

Vitamins for the production of healthy skin include Vitamins A, C, E, K and B. While applying sunscreen whenever going outside can reduce skin damage from the sun and applying lotion can reduce and eliminate dry skin, vitamins can promote ongoing skin health from the inside out. A healthy diet balanced with meat, fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains will ensure that you receive an adequate amount of the vitamins for healthy skin. Sometimes, a doctor may suggest patients take daily multivitamins when it is difficult or impossible for a patient to get the minimum amount of vitamins needed for good health. Ideally, people should try to obtain all of the vitamins for healthy skin through diet alone rather than supplements, as supplements may contain too much of each vitamin.

Effects of Vitamins

Four hundred milligrams of Vitamin E per day can reduce the skin's damage from sunlight and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Combined with Vitamin C, Vitamin E is also notable for reducing sunburns and other skin damage related to excessive sun exposure. Body lotions that contain Vitamins C and E can also be useful in encouraging skin elasticity and providing a youthful appearance to skin. Load up on a diet of fresh citrus fruits and vegetables to ensure an adequate intake of Vitamin C, and look to nuts and seeds to obtain Vitamin E. The appropriate intake of Vitamin A is also important: a Vitamin A deficiency can lead to dry, flaky skin. It is also known to help reduce the appearance of acne. Fortunately, like Vitamin C, Vitamin A is commonly found in fruits and vegetables. Biotin, a type of Vitamin B, is important to avoid itchy dry skin. Eat bananas, rice or take a Biotin supplement to ensure you get an adequate daily intake. While eating foods that contain Vitamin K will not do much for the body, skin creams that contain Vitamin K are notable for reducing the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.

Concerns About Vitamins

The dietary needs of individuals vary based on age, gender and pregnancy. Ask a physician about the amount of each Vitamin you should consume per day. Fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin A, E and K can cause toxicity in the human body if taken as an overdose over a long period of time, leading to instances of diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and sometimes death, depending on the severity of the overdose. A deficient intake of vitamins can also lead to other complications, like scurvy, which can result in the loss of teeth as a result of a Vitamin C deficiency. Too much or too little of any vitamin can have adverse effects on the skin and other parts of the body.

You can protect your skin in ways other than vitamin intake. Always wear a sunscreen of at least SPF 25 before going outdoors, and keep as much of the skin covered in clothing as possible. Drink plenty of water and avoid direct sunlight exposure. Use lip balms that contain sunscreen for added protection. Hats and scarves can cover the scalp to prevent damage from the sun. In the event of a sunburn, cover skin in aloe vera gel according to the product's guidelines. If a sunburn causes blistering, see a doctor for assistance immediately.
