Does the a Vitamin Keep Your Eyes Healthy?

Introduction

The eyes are one of the most important of the five senses in humans. Your sight shows you the world the way it is. It becomes really important to take proper care of your eyes and their health. A lot of eye defects are caused by inadequate nutrition and these defects can indicate the onset of a particular deficiency in your body too. However, the good thing is that it can be prevented and healed with the proper intake of the necessary nutrients.

Various eye problems may include eyestrain, night blindness, farsightednessa, photophobia, xerophtalmia, glaucoma, tension, and etc. Vitamin A is one of the most crucial nutrients for the eyes. The A vitamin is a significant nutrient mainly available from animal foods. Vitamin A is responsible for converting the light signals from the eyes into the brain into readable forms so that you can view things, colors, and sizes and distinguish amongst them accordingly. A lack of the A vitamin can lead to ailments like night blindness – a problem in which it becomes difficult for the eyes to adjust to the bright lights or darkness. Night blindness can be identified amongst people who require more than a minute to adjust their eyes in darkened places.

Vitamin A plays quite a significant role in basically enables the eyes to adjust itself in darkness and bright lights. However, night blindness can also be caused due to emotional problems, genetic factors, stress and fatigue. Night blindness is a clear case of a Vitamin deficiency and can be treated early because of the early signs it shows. In case of any delays in treatment, the deficiency can lead to reduction of retinoic acids, thereby interfering with the normal function of epithelial cells and degenerating the creation of mucus-secreting goblet cells. As the production of mucus gets reduced, the cornea and the lining of mucus membrane start getting dried up, thereby preventing the eyes to wash away the dirt and bacteria, which can ultimately lead to infection.

Proper intake of A Vitamin can help cure the night blindness. If not treated early, night blindness can also lead to Retinitis pigmentosa which is the state of gradual degeneration of retina, thereby resulting in blindness. Vitamin A intake can be increased through the consumption of food items rich in it. If the body of an individual is not able to absorb a vitamin properly, then vitamin A injections and supplements can also be recommended by the physician.

Apart from Vitamin A, niacin, riboflavin, zinc, and thiamin should also be taken in proper measures to ensure good health of eyes and for the prevention of other eye diseases and infections. For instance, Vitamin B12 is quite good in healing color identification disabilities, Vitamin C and Rutin are quite efficient in healing any eye infections and Vitamins B12, E, and niacin are good in treating any case of retinal hemorrhage.

Tips

In addition to a vitamin, carotenoid intake is also crucial for a good eye health. Carotenoids are mainly found in vegetables and fruits. One of the most common and important carotenoid, beta-carotene can be processed in our bodies and converted to Vitamin A. These carotenoids possess excellent anti-oxidant properties too, which is usually lacking in the vitamin A, hence it is essential to include carotenoids like lutein and lycopene too in your diet.
