How To Choose An Email Name And Password

Published at 03/29/2012 07:20:52

Introduction

Choosing an email name and password is about both aesthetics as well as security. Your email account is similar to having any other service, such as an account with a cell phone provider. Although many email services are free, such as Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Windows Live Mail, people often upgrade to the paid version. When you pay for service, you want to make sure that you get your money's worth. Even if it is free, there is still value to be had by correctly selecting a good email address.

For example, many people apply for new jobs or solicit new clients using email messages. If your email address is suggestive and explicit nature, including profanity and terms of a sexual nature, you could lose out on a professional opportunity to earn money. Also, some people and businesses have set up SPAM filters to filter out email addresses that contain certain types of words in the name.

On the security side of things you want to create an email password that is secure and cannot be compromised by another person. Here again, if your email address is used for professional purposes, someone could log in to your account with a weak password, and do terrible things to jeopardize your relationships with clients and others.

It is easy to choose the right email name and password, so long as you follow a few basic steps.

Step 1

Choose an email name that is patterned after your first and last name. People and business who receive emails often feel a sense of professionalism and security when they see an email address from a person who is using their legal name. You can even use a middle name or nickname, so long as it is verifiable. In some cases it may even be okay to make up a new name for yourself, if you want to protect your identity or create an online pseudonym, but you should be careful as this may be off-putting to some people who are trying to prevent being scammed and spammed con artists and the like.

Step 2

Create your email name and password according to the restrictions set forth by the email service provider. For example, the number of characters in the name may be limited to less than 20 numbers and letters. Some providers may allow users to include a special symbol in the name, such as a period or hyphen.

The password may also be restricted to just letters, numbers and a few special characters.

Step 3

Create an email name that is not very common, even if it's your own legal name. Some hackers and spammers can create variations of common names, in an effort to try to figure out your log in information. For example, they might experiment with sending an email to "Johnny-Doe@example.com" since it is close to the more common name "John-Doe@example.com." Instead add a few letters and numbers, such as "John-Doe-III@example.com" to prevent someone from using a fancy program to predict your email address.

Step 4

Research the email name in a search engine to make sure it is not close to other names. Although, most providers will alert you if your chosen name matches someone else's during sign up.

Step 5

Look up the modern meaning of words that you use in your email name to make sure they have not taken on a negative meaning.

Tips

Keep your email name and password safe and secure.
