Introduction

Diseases of the scalp can often lead to hair loss that can prove to be embarrassing for both men and women who are afflicted. The hair loss can be temporary, or in some cases, permanent. The treatment for diseases of the scalp range based on the type of disease, how widespread it is and the overall health of the patient. A medical professional will determine the best course of action to minimize the effect the diseases of the scalp has on the patient. The recommended course of action may or may not work to ease the disease and its appearance.

Lifestyle Changes

Depending on the type of diseases of the scalp a person has, the treatment could involve a change in lifestyle. Lifestyle changes could include changing what a person eats, his sleep patterns and the amount of exercise he receives. Dietary changes means the intake of more minerals and vitamins. The lack of minerals and vitamins is one of the top causes of diseases of the scalp resulting in hair loss or scabs on the scalp. Other changes can include exercise, yoga and meditation that can help with reducing stress, which is another leading cause of scalp diseases. If the person has suffered from extreme weight loss or weight gain that coincided with the appearance of the diseases of the scalp, diagnostic testing may be performed to determine if another disease is causing the issue.

Non-Surgical Treatment

Treatment of diseases of the scalp can involve the use of non-surgical treatments such as the use of corticosteroids or external creams. Corticosteroids can, or anti-inflammatory drugs, are used to build up the autoimmune system which can help with some diseases of the scalp. The drug is often prescribed in the oral form, but it is also available as a cream that can be rubbed on the affected areas. Other creams, such as minoxidil, are also available to use in the treatment of diseases of the scalp. The drugs are used to create hair growth after hair loss from a disease. Depending on the root cause of the disease, drugs such as minoxidil can produce disappointing results. As with other medications, users of the drugs may experience side effects that can range from an allergic reaction to weight loss. A medical professional will opt to either terminate the use of the medication or change the dosage if this occurs.

Surgical Treatment

As a last resort, surgical treatment is available in some cases of diseases of the scalp. Surgical treatment is primarily used when hair has been lost as a result of the disease. The idea is to help promote hair growth or to provide permanent covering for bald spots that can result form diseases of the scalp. The most commonly used type of surgical treatment includes hair transplant, scalp flap transfer and scalp reduction. The treatments range in effectiveness and are sometimes covered by insurance. The surgeries are thought to provide a safe alternative to living with bald spots or hair loss that results from diseases of the scalp.
