Introduction

A dog’s skin is said to be an indicator of its overall health. Dogs are prone to a number of skin diseases. Skin diseases in dogs may arise due to a number of causes like genetic disorders, improper diet, lack of hygiene, etc. Below is a list of the most widespread skin diseases dogs suffer from.

History

1) Allergic dermatitis: This is among the most common skin diseases in dogs. Just like humans, dogs too may have allergies to certain substances. These substances generally include dog soaps, shampoos and certain types of dog food. A dog may also be allergic to the bites of certain insects. A dog with allergic dermatitis constantly scratches its skin. If the skin of such a dog is inspected closely, a rash is observed. This rash can be treated with corticosteroids, but this does not completely cure the disease. The most effective method of preventing allergic dermatitis is to identify the causes of the allergies and avoiding exposure to them.

2) Yeast infections: A yeast infection generally affects the areas between the nails or the ears. These places are warm and moist and are conducive to the growth of yeast. If your dog is constantly scratching his ears or licking his paws, then chances are that it is suffering from a yeast infection. A vet may prescribe ointments, creams, baths or oral medicines to treat the infection.

Features

3) Seborrhea: This is a genetic disease which affects the dog from a young age and then remains with it for its entire lifetime. It is among the most dreaded skin diseases in dogs. The skin becomes oily and scaly and ruins the appearance of the dog. However, most cases of seborrhoea are not genetic but are a result of other complications such as allergies and hormonal imbalances. If these causes are identified and treated, then the disease can be eradicated and the condition may be prevented from recurring.

4) Alopecia: This is among the most commonly occurring skin diseases dogs. It is a known fact that all dogs shed. However, if your dog begins shedding excessively and tufts of hair start falling off it, then it is time for a visit to the vet. The most common causes of alopecia may be improper diet, stress and even old age.

5) Mange: There are basically two types of mange– sarcoptic mange and demodectic mange. These skin diseases dogs are caused by parasites. Sarcoptic mange is also known by the name canine scabies. It may also spread to humans, but the parasites cannot survive on human beings. The most common symptoms of sarcoptic mange include excessive scratching, loss or hair, sores and red skin. These symptoms are generally observed in the following areas of a dog’s body- legs, ears and between the eyes, forehead and the nose. Demodectic mange cannot be transmitted to humans and is characterised by sores, bald areas and scabbing.

6) Skin diseases in dogs may sometimes be a result of immune disorder. Such skin diseases dogs are not very common but if detected, they can be difficult to cure. Lupus is a disease which is observed in dogs as well as humans. It is a condition where the immune system of the body begins to invade its own cells and kills them. This condition can be fatal if it is not treated in time. It is often characterised by lesions on the dog’s skin.
