the Most Common Diseases in Dogs

Introduction

Our dogs are our companions and they depend on us for their care. It is important to know some of the most common diseases in dogs to be able to provide your dog to live a happy, healthy life. It is important as a dog owner to learn and understand common diseases in dogs so that you can keep a close eye on your dog and take you dog to the veterinarian. Dogs can get some of the same diseases as humans can and some diseases in dogs include skin diseases, allergies, eye and ear infections, and hip dysplasia.

Skin Diseases/Allergies

Common diseases such as skin diseases are one of the most common problems seen in dogs and can make a dog very uncomfortable. Skin problems can be due to parasites, dog food, environmental factor or neurological concerns. Of skin infection might include irritability, restless, loss of appetite, hair loss, inflamed skin, inflamed skin, scabs and odor. Some common causes of skin diseases are hot spots, fleas and ticks, and yeast infections. Hot spots are a sign of skin disease. It means that there is a spot that is hot, red and inflamed on the dog’s skin. It is itchy, possibly bloody and scabbed from scratching the area. What ever is itchy can cause your dog to have a hot spot. Hot spots can be found anywhere on the dogs head, stomach, or hips. It can occur from insect bites, or excessive licking or scratching.

Yeast infections can occur anywhere in the skin but mostly on a dogs ears and toes. Symptoms include itching, discolored skin, scaly skin, and thickened skin or foul odor.

Parasitic infections can cause skin problems. Mange is an example and can cause excessive itching, hair loss, and soars, red and inflamed skin.

Common diseases in dogs such as dog allergies are very common in most breeds. Dog allergies can develop at any age and can be a problem to your pet. Fleas, pollen and molds are examples of dog allergies. Inhaled allergens are the most common type of allergy for dogs. Symptoms might include problems with breathing, coughing, wheezing, red, itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, and itching. There are many types of allergies that include food, environmental, and contact allergies.

Ear Infections

Ear infections, such as otitis, are a common problem and can be caused by allergies, ear mites, bacterial infections, food allergies, yeast or improper dog hygiene. Symptoms might include head shaking, pain, and ear odor that are yellow or black in color, trouble walking, redness, swelling, brown, yellow, or bloody discharge. There are three types of ear infections in dogs. The first one is the other ear, middle ear and the inner ear infections and symptoms usually include inflammation and wax discharge odor.

Hip Dysplasia

Common diseases in dogs like hip dysplasia, which is common in dogs. It affects the hip joints of dogs. The hip joints are the ball and socket joints that pivot freely to allow dogs to walk regularly. A dog with hip dysplasia will have an abnormal hip joint that will not allow the joint to operate properly. It could be a crippling disease. Some common symptoms are a waddling gait, swaying or staggering, difficulty in rising form a laying down position, trouble squatting to go to the bathroom, and reluctant to exercise.
