How Calcium Affects Diseases

Introduction

Calcium is one of the most essential minerals needed for the proper functioning of the body. It is very important for strong bones and teeth. Various other organs like the nervous system, heart and the blood clotting systems also need the right amount of calcium to work well.

While less calcium in the body can lead to teeth problems and osteoporosis - a disease that affects the bones and joints, excess quantities of calcium in the body can also cause calcium diseases.

History

If the calcium is not absorbed by the teeth and bones it might be because of one of the most common calcium diseases osteoporosis. The excess calcium in such cases gets absorbed in other parts of the body leading to various conditions like fatigue, depression, weakened muscles, bloating, constipation, calcium stones and in a few cases even weakened kidney function. In such cases a diet that is not rich in calcium has to be taken for a while. But most often the excess calcium is expelled from the body through sweat and waste.

About 99% of the calcium in the body is found in the bones and teeth. It is also found in blood, muscles and tissues. Reduced estrogen levels lead to less absorption of calcium in women. Calcium in the body also gets reduced because of old age leading to calcium diseases.

Deficiency of calcium in the body results in brittle bones and nails and dry skin. Eating calcium rich foods is the best way to get sufficient amounts of calcium needed by the body and prevent calcium diseases. Normal healthy adults need about 1000mg of calcium every day and this can be got from drinking milk, yoghurt, eating cheese, egg and various calcium rich vegetables like beans, and broccoli, citrus fruits, and cereals.

Calcium supplements must be taken in case of calcium deficiency and calcium diseases. However this must be eaten with enough amount of vitamin D as it helps to absorb calcium. If it is not taken without vitamin D the risk of myocardial infarction is high.

Features

Calcium can reduce complications that arise after intestinal bypass surgery. It is also used to treat high blood pressure, Lyme disease, high cholesterol and to reduce the levels of fluorine in children. It is used to reduce phosphate levels in kidney diseases and for various problems that cause premenstrual syndrome, leg cramps during pregnancy. Calcium can reduce risk of cancers like the colon and rectal cancers and other calcium diseases.
