Best Universities in Ga For Science Students


The state of Georgia (GA) is home to many excellent public and private colleges and universities. These schools offer a wide variety of subjects and areas of study. Students come from all over the world to attend universities in GA for this reason.

Step 1

When one thinks of GA universities that excel at science Georgia college of Technology or Georgia Tech is most likely the first school to come to mind. Georgia Tech is a public research university located in Atlanta, GA. It was founded in 1885.

In 2010, Georgia Tech ranked high on several top science programs lists, according to "U.S. News and World Report." It was the 56th school in the nation for biology, the 30th school in the nation for physics majors and when it comes to computer science, the school ranked tenth in the nation. It is consistently ranked as one of the top universities in the country.

The school is especially known for its world-famous engineering programs. All of Georgia Tech's engineering schools rank in the top ten, including the Schools of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Computer Engineering, Materials Engineering and Chemical Engineering.





Step 2

Emory University is another school in Georgia that is well-known for its science programs. "U.S. News and World Report" ranks the school as 34th in the nation in biological sciences and 38th in the nation in chemistry. It is often ranked in the top 30 for universities in the country.

It is also home to one of the top medical schools in the country. The Emory University School of Medicine receives over 6,000 applications each year, but it only admits about 132 students. Emory's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing offers Bachelors degrees, Masters degrees and Doctorate degrees in nursing. Emory is located just outside of Atlanta, GA in Dekalb County. The private research university was founded in 1836.




Step 3

The University of Georgia is located in Athens, Ga, about sixty miles from Atlanta. The public research university was founded in 1785, and it is the oldest school in the state. The school is known throughout the state of GA and the country for being a top institution when it comes to agricultural sciences and marine biology. In 2010, the University of Georgia ranked number 46 in the nation when it comes to its biochemistry and molecular biology departments.

The University of Georgia Marine college, located off the coast of the state of Ga, is a world-renowned ecological and geological laboratory. The school is also home to the Coastal Plain Research Arboretum, located in Tifton, GA, where students can study horticulture and conservation. The Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences opened in 2006, allowing the school to better compete with other universities in the field of medical research.



Step 4

Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, GA, Georgia State University is one of the largest universities in the state. It was founded in 1913 and has a student body population of over 30,000. Georgia State University is known for its numerous large programs, such as business and law, but it is also know for its various science departments. Researchers at the school have made major advancements in the fields of astronomy, biotechnology and computer science. In 2010, the school completed a 119 million dollar science park, complete with dozens of science classrooms and laboratories. 

Step 5

Mercer University is a large, private college located in Macon, Ga. It has Baptist roots and was founded in 1833. It is also home to one of the only medical schools in Ga.

Mercer has a number of highly regarded science-oriented schools and colleges. The School of Engineering is one of the only schools of its kind in the state. Its Georgia Baptist College of Nursing has been serving the state since 1901. The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is the first school in the southeastern United States to offer a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. It now offers training for physician assistants and those who wish to obtain a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.

The state of Georgia is home to over 35 colleges and universities. each one of them has much to offer prospective students. When it comes to science, the larger universities are the ones that generally excel in this field. Most of them offer a wide variety of degrees in a variety of fields, ranging from engineering to biology to computer science.
