The Reasons For Hair Loss

The loss of hair is actually a normal thing. Everybody experiences the loss of hair. Studies have shown that the average person loses fifty to a hundred hairs per day. This isn't a problem because the hairs we lose are replaced with new hairs. however, if a person is losing extensive amounts of hair and it isn't growing back, this is likely unhealthy and they should visit a dermatologist to see how they can combat it. This article will explore some possible causes of hair loss, and how to combat them.

Causes of Hair Loss

1. Telogen Effluvium

This usually occurs after pregnancy, drastic weight loss (usually brought on by eating disorders), extreme stress, surgery, fever, chronic illness, anemia or even under certain medications. It's characterized by the extreme loss of hair, or thinning or shedding of hair along the scalp. People suffering from Telogen Effluvium may even lose handfuls of hair at its most extreme state. 

2. Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is most commonly suffered by women, and it is primarily caused by the body not producing enough of the thyroid hormone. The thyroid hormone is responsible for metabolism, mood and heart rate. When your body isn't getting enough of this hormone, you will experience changes in your bodily functions. Hypothyroidism comes with a number of symptoms, including weight gain, brittle nails, dry skin, brittle hair or hair loss, fatigue, constipation and depression. Hyperthyroidism, the opposite of hypothyroidism, may also cause hair loss.

3. Hereditary Hair Loss

This is the most common cause for loss of hair. It can be passed on through both the mother and father's gene, however, you're most likely to have the gene if both of your parents have experienced hair loss. Hereditary hair loss usually starts thinning behind the bangs, and in some cases around the entire scalp. This trait develops slowly, and it may not be seen until you're in your 20s.

4. Iron Deficiency Anemia

Iron deficiency is categorized by the lack of red blood cells. It's often seen in women that have heavy periods or who don't eat foods that are rich in iron. Symptoms include pale skin, weakness, fatigue, headaches, cold hands and feet, hair loss and shortness of breath.

5. Skin Conditions of the Scalp

If you're scalp is unhealthy, it may be inflamed, which makes it difficult for hair to grow. Scalp conditions that can lead to hair loss may include: psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff) or fungal infections such as ringworm. Symptoms may vary depending on the skin condition, however, they all may result in the loss of hair. 

How to Deal With It

Telogen Effluvium:

In some cases of Telogen Effluvium, you can simply wait it out and your hair will begin to grow back. However, in the case of medication, consult your doctor to see what might be causing the hair loss, and see about getting taken off of it. If your experiencing high levels of stress, do what you can do bring stress levels down.


There are thyroid hormone medications available that may bring your hormones back to normal.

Hereditary Hair Loss: 

Hereditary loss of hair can be slowed by using the product Rogaine twice a day. If you're a woman using Rogaine, use a weaker formula to prevent unnecessary side effects.

Iron Deficiency Anemia: 

Start eating foods that are rich in iron and Vitamin C, the iron will help combat the iron deficiency and vitamin C can aid in the absorption of iron. There are also iron supplements available, and supplements specifically designed to help combat hair loss that may help.

Skin Conditions of the Scalp:

Talk to your doctor or dermatologist, there are various medications available that may help combat these conditions. Also, do your best to reduce stress in your daily life.
